Michigan House Bill 5114, Children Need Both Parents, was introduced June 17 by
Rep. Brian Calley (R). HB5114 would mandate that "in a custody
dispute between parents, the Court shall order joint custody unless either of
the following applies: (A) The Court determines by clear and convincing evidence
that a parent is unfit, unwilling or unable to care for the child," or,
(B) if a parent "is unable to maintain the child's school schedule without
interruption.
HB5114 has 19 co-sponsors and has been referred to the House Judiciary
Committee, Mark Meadows (D), chairman. Meadows is against efforts by parents of
broken homes to equally raise and care for their children, and is not expected
to allow HB5114 a proper hearing.
